Sciatica describes nerve-related pain that may travel from the lower back or buttock into the thigh, calf or foot. Pins and needles, numbness or weakness may also occur. The trigger varies because several lower-back conditions can irritate the nerves that contribute to the sciatic nerve.

Why Does Sciatica Flare Up?

What Are the Most Common Running Injuries?

Running injuries most often affect the knee, shin, Achilles tendon, calf, foot and hip. Many develop gradually when a recent running demand exceeds the capacity of a muscle, tendon, joint or bone.

Which running injuries are most common?

Running-related injuries can affect muscles, tendons, joints, bones and other supporting tissues. Some start suddenly, such as an ankle sprain or calf strain. However, many build over several runs as repeated loading exceeds the tissue’s current capacity.

Runner’s knee

Pain around or behind the kneecap. It commonly becomes noticeable during hills, stairs, squats or longer runs.

Shin splints

Achilles tendinopathy

Pain and stiffness around the Achilles tendon. Morning stiffness and discomfort at the start of running are common features.

Plantar fasciopathy

ITB syndrome

Where do runners commonly feel pain?

Front or outside of the knee

Front-of-knee pain may relate to runner’s knee, also called patellofemoral pain. Symptoms often become noticeable during downhill running, stairs, squats or after sitting with the knee bent.

Pain on the outside of the knee may fit an iliotibial band presentation. However, several knee structures can cause pain in a similar area. The location alone does not confirm a diagnosis.

Muscle recovery usually improves when you give your body enough time, sleep, food and appropriately scaled movement. Massage, foam rolling, compression and cold-water immersion may help soreness in selected situations, but none can replace recovery time or repair a muscle strain instantly.

First, work out whether you have routine post-exercise soreness, general fatigue or an injury. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) commonly develops after unfamiliar or harder exercise. Sharp pain, bruising, swelling or sudden weakness may instead suggest a muscle strain.

How Can You Speed Up Muscle Recovery?

You cannot force a muscle to repair immediately. However, you can remove common barriers to recovery and choose strategies that suit your training, symptoms and next activity.

Start by adjusting the load. A lighter session, extra recovery day or temporary change of exercise may be enough when you have normal soreness. Complete rest is rarely necessary for mild DOMS, although the activity should not make your symptoms progressively worse.

If the pain began suddenly, remains focused in one spot or affects strength and function, review guidance for an acute soft tissue injury rather than trying to “recover faster” through it.

Six Practical Muscle Recovery Strategies

1. Protect Your Sleep

Sleep supports physical repair, nervous-system recovery, immune function and readiness to train. There is no perfect number for every person, but many adults need roughly seven to nine hours. Athletes may need more during heavy training or competition periods.

Focus on a regular sleep and wake time, a dark and quiet room, and enough time in bed. Avoid treating one poor night as a crisis. Instead, look for a repeated pattern of poor sleep, daytime fatigue or declining training quality.

2. Adjust Your Training Load

Recovery depends on the balance between training stress and your ability to adapt. Repeating hard sessions before you have regained normal movement and energy may prolong soreness and reduce training quality.

You may not need to stop. Instead, reduce the weight, distance, speed, duration or number of sets. You can also train another body region or choose an easy aerobic session.

3. Eat and Drink Enough

Recovery requires enough total energy and protein. Carbohydrate replacement also matters after long, intense or repeated sessions. A normal meal containing protein, carbohydrate and a variety of foods will suit many recreational athletes.

Drink according to thirst and replace fluid lost through heavy sweating. Extra water does not make muscles repair faster when you are already well hydrated. People training for long periods, in hot conditions or across several sessions may need a more planned fluid and electrolyte strategy.

4. Keep Moving Lightly

Easy walking, gentle cycling and comfortable mobility work can reduce the feeling of stiffness after ordinary exercise soreness. Keep the effort low enough that movement feels the same or easier afterwards.

Stretching may improve comfort or range for some people, but research does not show a meaningful reduction in DOMS from stretching before or after exercise. Use it for mobility when it helps rather than as a required soreness treatment.

5. Use Massage, Foam Rolling or Compression for Comfort

Recovery massage may reduce perceived soreness and stiffness after demanding training or competition. Its effect varies, so view massage as one part of a broader recovery plan rather than a shortcut around sleep or sensible loading.

A foam roller may provide a similar self-management option. Roll slowly with tolerable pressure. Do not continue over a region that feels sharply painful, bruised or injured.

Compression garments may improve comfort for some people during the first day or two after strenuous activity. Choose a garment that fits comfortably and does not cause numbness, tingling, colour change or increasing pain.

6. Use Cold Water Selectively

Cold-water immersion may reduce soreness after demanding competition, tournaments or closely spaced events. It is most useful when short-term recovery matters more than maximising the training response from that session.

Regular cold-water immersion immediately after strength training may reduce some of the adaptation you are trying to gain. Therefore, avoid treating an ice bath as a compulsory part of every workout.

Should You Take Pain-Relieving Medication?

Pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory medication is not a routine muscle-recovery strategy. It may reduce symptoms, but it can also hide pain that would otherwise tell you to reduce the load.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using medication, particularly if you have other health conditions, take regular medicines or need repeated doses to continue training. Medication should not replace assessment of suspected muscle injury.

When Is Muscle Soreness More Than Normal?

DOMS commonly begins several hours after unfamiliar exercise, peaks within about 24 to 72 hours and then gradually settles. It usually affects a broader part of the worked muscle and feels stiff or tender rather than sharply injured.

Arrange an assessment when you notice:

  • sharp or sudden pain during activity;
  • bruising, marked swelling or a visible change in the muscle;
  • a sudden loss of strength or movement;
  • pain that keeps worsening;
  • difficulty walking or completing normal daily tasks;
  • symptoms that remain unchanged beyond several days; or
