How to Prevent Snowboarding Injuries
Going on a snow holiday could be both exciting and intimidating if you are a beginner. Snowboarding is a bit different from skiing in a few ways, and most people would agree that snowboarding is more challenging for learners. Scientists reported in a study that out of all the winter warriors that got hurt, 49% of the injured snowboarders were beginners, and only 18% of injured skiers were beginners (1). Here are some things to watch out for:
Common Snowboarding Injuries
Impact Injuries
Since snowboarders do not use ski poles, beginners often brace themselves with their arms when falling. This can cause impact-style injuries such as wrist fractures, ligament sprains, or dislocated shoulders. Upper limb injuries account for up to 49.1% of all snowboarding injuries(2). If you suffer from intense or persistent pain after a severe wipeout, it would be a good idea to have it examined. You could have an undiagnosed fracture which may need some professional medical care.
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)
Another common condition we see is Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). Due to the nature of the squat/knee-bend snowboarding stance, the quadriceps endure a great deal of force and exertion when you are “shredding” the slopes. Fatigue, muscle cramping, and loss of muscle control are some symptoms of DOMS. Symptoms may be worse if you are snowboarding a few days in a row.
Ankle & Foot Sprains
Snowboarding boots are usually soft in contrast to hard ski boots. This increases the likelihood of sprains to the ankle or foot. While not as common as upper limb injuries, ankle and foot injuries in snowboarding are more likely than in skiing and should not be missed.
How Do You Prevent Snowboarding Injuries?
To prevent injuries to the upper limbs, learning bracing and safe falling techniques is very important.
Devices like wrist guards or strapping tape are beneficial for individuals with weak wrists or unstable shoulders. Your physiotherapist will also assess your muscle strength and joint stability to see if you are at risk of any particular type of injury. You may be prescribed some appropriate exercises or be advised to use some protective equipment or safe landing tips!.
Correct use of snowboarding equipment is also essential. Proper fitting and wearing of snowboard boots and bindings are crucial for preventing ankle sprains, while helmets are great for avoiding head traumas and concussions. Who wants to forget their great holiday?

Arm Pain Causes
Arm pain and injuries are widespread. The causes can be related to sports injuries, work injuries or simply everyday arm use. Arm pain can occur due to either sudden, traumatic or repetitive overuse.
Arm pain can be a local injury, musculoskeletal injury or could even be referred from nerves in your neck (cervical radiculopathy). This can result in neck-arm pain.

Common Causes of Arm Pain
The most common sources of arm pain include shoulder pain, wrist pain and elbow pain.
- Your rotator cuff or frozen shoulder most commonly causes shoulder pain.
- Elbow pain is commonly caused by tennis elbow or golfers elbow.
- Wrist & hand pain can be related to carpal tunnel, wrist arthritis or even a thumb tendon condition known as de Quervain's tenosynovitis.
Referred Arm Pain
Cervical radiculopathy is a common source of referred arm pain. As mentioned earlier, your neck can refer to arm pain from another source. Cervical radiculopathy will respond positively to treatment at the source of the injury (e.g. your neck joints).
Professional assessment from a health practitioner skilled in diagnosing both spinal-origin and local-origin (muscle and joint) injuries (e.g. your physiotherapist) is recommended to ensure an accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment directed at the arm pain source.
Arm Pain has Diverse Causes.
The causes of your arm pain can be extensive and varied. Due to this diversity, your arm pain should be assessed by a suitably qualified health practitioner to attain an accurate diagnosis, treatment plan and implementation specific to your arm pain.
What Arm Pain is Associated with a Heart Attack?
Left-arm pain can be an early sign of a life-threatening cardiac issue. A professional medical assessment that involves an accurate history, symptom analysis, physical examination and diagnostic tests to exclude a potential heart attack is essential to exclude this potentially life-threatening source of arm pain.

Most Arm Pain is NOT Life-Threatening.
Luckily, life-threatening arm pain is far less likely than a local musculoskeletal injury. Before commencing treatment, your health practitioner should assess and confirm arm pain caused by a localised arm muscle, tendon or joint damage.

The good news is that arm pain and injury will typically respond very favourably to medical or physiotherapy intervention when early professional assessment and treatment are sought. Please do not delay in consulting your healthcare practitioner if you experience arm pain.
