What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on the activation of your deep, core muscles and incorporates them into functional movements.

Your core muscles are very important in providing stability at each segment of the spine during movement. Core stability retraining is a vital part of the rehabilitation process for people with a history of back, neck or lower limb pain. Correct activation of these muscles during day-to-day activities will improve your recovery markedly and reduce your risk of reinjury.

There are a number of approaches to pilates that vary in difficulty and skill level, equipment and the aim of the exercises. Clinical pilates, as taught at PhysioWorks, is specifically designed for people with back pain and movement dysfunction! It includes a variety of different exercises which train your core muscles to switch on during dynamic movements of your body.

Is Pilates for You?

Possibly! Pilates is proven to reduce symptoms, improve function and prevent recurrence across a variety of musculoskeletal disorders. Overaggressive pilates exercise programs that are too difficult for your body can, however, cause MORE pain and injury!

Pilates at Sandgate PhysioWorks

At Sandgate PhysioWorks, we run a three-stage program to ensure regular classes at a level which is suitable for you. We utilise small class sizes to provide a safe and steady exercise progression for you in a social setting.

Introductory

The first step in your Pilates journey is an initial one-on-one screening and basic core training session with one of our qualified Pilates Physiotherapists. This involves an assessment of your current strengths and demands, and will aid in placing you in the group that best suits your needs!

Dynamic

Best suits: Pilates newcomers, people with a current or recent history of back or neck pain, or those who have taken an extended break from their Pilates regime.

Advanced

Best suits: Seasoned Pilates enthusiasts, athletes, ‘Dynamic Pilates’ graduates

Can You Bring a Friend to Pilates?

Of course! We encourage you to bring a friend or two, or even organise a small group for a private Pilates class at a time that suits you. The maximum group size we run at PhysioWorks is six people to ensure that you are not lost in a crowd.
